You are viewing a famous oil painting, "Farbstudie Quadrate" by Wassily Kandinsky. The original masterpiece oil painting was painted in 1913.

Regarding his oil paintings Kandinsky said :
"Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul."
As a founding father of abstract art at the turn of the 20th Century, Kandinsky used the intensity and abstraction of musical compositions to inspire his paintings.
